IHB stands for Irregular Heartbeat. If the IHB symbol appears on your blood pressure monitor's screen during or after a reading, it means the monitor detected an irregular pulse pattern while measuring your blood pressure.
Does an IHB result mean something is wrong?
Not necessarily. The IHB symbol can appear due to minor, temporary irregularities in your pulse — such as moving slightly during the measurement, taking a deep breath, or normal variation in your heartbeat. It does not automatically indicate a medical problem.
However, when IHB is detected, the blood pressure reading displayed may be less accurate than usual.
What to do when you see the IHB symbol
- Sit still, relax for 5 minutes, and take a new measurement.
- During the measurement: sit quietly with both feet flat on the floor, do not cross your legs, do not talk, and breathe normally.
- If the IHB symbol appears repeatedly across multiple readings, mention it to your doctor or healthcare provider.
