A low-carb diet can mean several things. A moderately low-carb may get under 35-40% of calories from carbs, or 175-200 grams daily. Another low-carb diet may get less than the adequate intake (AI), or 130 grams daily. A very low-carb, or ketogenic, diet, may get less than 20-40 grams of carbohydrates daily.
Moderately low-carb diets may meet other recommendations, such as for whole grains and fruit consumption. Ketogenic diets are unlikely to be able to meet certain recommendations. They may lead to side effects.
It’s important to check with your healthcare provider before following any extreme diet.
